On October 24, the Republican scientific conference “Modern problems of geography” dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the Sumgayit city organized at Sumgayit State University.

Along with leading universities of the republic, the Institute of Geography of ANAS named after Academician Hasan Aliyev and scientists of the Research Institute of Hydrometeorology of Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources took part in the conference.

The guests visited the Heydar Aliyev Center and got acquainted with photographs reflecting all stages of the life and work of the national leader, including his visit as President of sovereign Azerbaijan to foreign countries, meetings with authoritative international politicians, and a library dedicated to the great political figure. Director of the Institute of Geography of ANAS named after academician Hasan Aliyev Professor Ramiz Mammadov and director of the Research Institute of Hydrometeorology of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources Rza Mahmudov left entries in the book of memory.

The conference was opened by the rector of SSU, Professor Elkhan Huseynov. He spoke about the importance of the conference and the support provided by nationwide leader Heydar Aliyev to geographical science. It was noted that the national leader has always highly appreciated the activities of scientists and the contribution they make to Azerbaijani science. Rector Professor Elkhan Huseynov also said that the reports received at the conference reflected the current problems of the geography of Azerbaijan, and 94 theses were published in the conference proceedings.

The rector emphasized that the State Program on the socio-economic development of the regions gives high results and allows for the implementation of a number of strategic projects. Since 2004, State programs for the development of the country's regions have been developed and implemented. The rector noted that this work in the republic will be continued in the future and wished success to the work of the conference.

The following persons delivered report in the conference: Professor Ramiz Mammadov, Director of the Institute of Geography of ANAS named after academician Hasan Aliyev- “Problems of Caspian Sea Level Change,” Professor Rza Mahmudov, Director of the Research Institute of Hydrometeorology of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources- “The impact of global climate change on hydrometeorological and socio - economic conditions in Azerbaijan ”, Professor Tahir Aghayev, head of the Department of Geography and its teaching methods of SSU-“Features of the influence of pollution sources of industrial enterprises on the atmosphere on the Absheron Peninsula”. Speakers noted that geography as a science has a rich history and spoke about its contribution to world science.
