The “Recycle and Save the World” initiative, implemented by the Library Information Center of Sumgayit State University (SSU) in support of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), is being successfully implemented.
On July 9, 2025 the project started, and its goal was to increase environmental responsibility at the university, reduce paper waste, and redirect it to recycling. As part of the initiative, the faculty and structural units collected office documents, expired sheets, magazines, and other paper materials and handed them over for processing. As a result of the active participation of university staff, a total of 1,120 kilograms of paper waste were recycled. The collected materials are considered an important contribution to environmental protection, conservation of natural resources, and waste reduction. It should be noted that recycling 1 ton of paper prevents the cutting of approximately 17 trees, reduces air pollution by 74%, water pollution by 35%, and saves 4,000 kWh of electricity. These indicators demonstrate the real contribution of the SSU team to Sustainable Development Goals 13 (“Combating Climate Change”), 15 (“Life on Earth”) and 17 (“Partnering for the Goals”). SSU plans to organize this activity on an ongoing basis, traditionally at the end of each semester. This will serve to increase environmental awareness, efficient use of resources, and the formation of a green mindset at the university.
