A round table dedicated to the book "Flora of Karabakh" held at the Presidential Library
On January 13, 2026, a round table dedicated to the discussion of the book "Flora of Karabakh" was held at the Presidential Library. Deputy Director of the State Agency for Science and Higher Education, Acting Rector of Sumgayit State University, Corresponding Member of ANAS Aminaga Sadigov attended the event. Aminaga Sadigov welcomed the participants of the event on behalf of the Ministry of Science and Education and spoke about the scientific and practical importance of the book "Flora of Karabakh". He said that under the leadership of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Supreme Commander-in-Chief, Mr. Ilham Aliyev, ensuring the territorial integrity of our country has opened a new stage in our history. At this stage, the restoration of the Karabakh and East Zangezur regions is one of the main priorities of state policy. It should be noted that the role of science and education in this process is of exceptional importance. The activities of the Ministry of Science and Education regarding the liberated territories are based on a systematic, targeted, and long-term strategic vision. The main goal of the ministry is to transform Karabakh into a region that is not only restored, but also scientifically researched and knowledge-based. In this context, the tasks set before scientific and higher education institutions are, first of all, to pay special attention to fundamental and applied research in natural and technical sciences. Scientific research conducted in the fields of soil, water resources, biodiversity, environmental security, and "green energy" forms the scientific basis of the region's sustainable development concept. Aminaga Sadigov noted that the publication of the book "Flora of Karabakh" is also the result of the dedicated work of the staff of the Institute of Botany as part of the broad action plan of the Ministry of Science and Education. This book is a great encyclopedic source, elegantly printed, well visualized, presented to researchers and other readers in scientific and popular language. He also said that research on the history, cultural heritage, social development prospects, and post-conflict realities of Karabakh is being expanded in the field of humanities and social sciences. These studies are of great importance in terms of restoring national memory and presenting historical truths to the world on a scientific basis. One of the priorities for the Ministry of Science and Education is the formation of scientific infrastructure and a higher education environment. As a result of the special support and care of the state, the construction and commissioning of secondary schools in the regions liberated from occupation, the establishment of Karabakh University and its transformation into a modern higher education and scientific research center serve to strengthen the institutional foundations of science and education in the region. Research work carried out in the Karabakh region by scientific institutions under the Ministry, scientific conferences, symposiums and international forums serve to expand scientific dialogue, create new opportunities for cooperation and promote Karabakh as a place of peace, development and science. Director of the Presidential Library, Professor Afat Abbasova spoke at the opening of the event, emphasized the value of the book “Flora of Karabakh” for scientists, researchers and a wide audience of readers, and noted the importance of scientifically investigating the serious damage caused to the ecological environment in the territories that have been under occupation for many years. Later, the speakers, including the scientific editor of the book, Director General of the Institute of Botany, Professor Sayyara Ibadullayeva, as well as representatives of science, education and the public, noted that the publication systematically presents the flora of the Karabakh and East Zangezur territories, and that the research conducted serves to strengthen the position of Azerbaijani science at the international level. The speeches specifically emphasized that the book is an important scientific source for scientists, students and biologists. It was noted that the book “Flora of Karabakh” contains a scientific classification of the plant world spread in the territories of Karabakh and East Zangezur, and presents the bioecological characteristics of rare and endemic species in detail. The publication includes 8 maps, 10 tables, and illustrations of more than 300 relict and endemic plants. The book contains scientific information on a total of more than 2,000 higher plants and more than 400 species of fungi, which allows for a comprehensive study of the rich biodiversity of Karabakh. At the end of the event, a video clip was shown reflecting the purpose of the book and its scientific significance.
