“The Miraculous Number Pi” Event Held at the Faculty of Mathematics
On March 13, the Faculty of Mathematics of Sumgayit State University held an event called “The Miraculous Pi Number” dedicated to the International “Pi (π)” Day. The event was organized by the Student Scientific Society, Student Youth Organization and Student Trade Union Committee of the faculty. The event was opened by the Dean of the Faculty, Associate Professor Khalida Hasanova and welcomed the participants. In her speech, she spoke about the history of the creation of “Pi” Day, the importance of the number in mathematics and science. She noted that the number Pi is one of the famous constants that is widely used in the world of mathematics and is full of mysteries. UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, decided to celebrate March 14 as the International Mathematics Day every year at a meeting held in Paris in 2019. This date is also celebrated by mathematicians every year as International “Pi” Day.
She emphasized that such events held by the faculty every year not only increase students' interest in mathematics, but also contribute to the development of their scientific knowledge and creative potential. During the event, students made interesting presentations about the history of the number "Pi", its application in various scientific fields and its important role in mathematics. As part of the program, a piano performance of a melody prepared according to the digits of the number π was presented. In addition, a film on the topic of π was shown. Then, associate professors of the faculty, Mahammadali Mammadov and Ilgar Mammadov conducted various studies on the wonders of the number π and presented interesting examples. They explained using examples that the number π is an infinite and non-repeating decimal fraction, that is, its decimal notation continues indefinitely and no sequence of digits repeats to form a period.
