On April 24, a seminar on the topic “Return to Western Azerbaijan: Historical Truths, Innovative Approach and Enlightenment” was held at Sumgayit State University (SSU) within the framework of the “Discover the Heritage of Western Azerbaijan” project. The seminar was held with the financial support of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the partnership of the Ministry’s Scientific-Methodological and Advanced Training Center for Culture and the West Azerbaijan Community, and the organization of the “IRELI” Public Union. The seminar, moderated by the Secretary General of the “IRELI” PU, Riad Jabrayilov began with a minute of silence in memory of the Great Leader Heydar Aliyev and our martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the freedom of our Motherland. In his speech, Vice-Rector for Social Affairs and Public Relations of SSU, Associate Professor Elmar Khalilov emphasized the historical significance of the project. He said that the ethnic cleansing and deportation policy carried out by Armenian nationalists against Azerbaijanis constitutes a tragic stage in our history. It was noted that the massacres of 1905 and 1918, the transfer of Zangezur to Armenia, as well as the deportations of 1948–1953 are part of this policy. As a result of Armenia's aggression, more than a million Azerbaijanis were displaced from their homeland. The liberation of our lands with the victory in the 44-day Patriotic War in 2020 was written as a glorious page in our history, and the "Great Return" State Program is currently being successfully implemented. The vice-rector also specifically noted the importance of preserving the cultural heritage of Western Azerbaijan and educating young people in this direction. In his speech, Riad Jabrayilov, Secretary General of the "IRELI" PU, provided detailed information about the public association he represents, as well as projects, conferences, festivals, camps and info sessions implemented to promote the cultural heritage of Western Azerbaijan. At the seminar, chairman of the representation of the West Azerbaijan Community in the Corat settlement of Sumgayit city, Nazim Huseynov, and chairman of the Youth Organization of the representation, Fuad Mammadov spoke about the salvation mission of the Great Leader Heydar Aliyev, the policy implemented by President Ilham Aliyev towards the return of Western Azerbaijanis to their native lands, the Concept of Return formed in this direction, and the effective activities of the West Azerbaijan Community. Senior specialist of the Public Relations and Communication Department of SSU, Shukur Aliyev spoke about the large-scale events held at Sumgayit State University on the topic of Western Azerbaijan. He provided information about the debates, seminars and various educational projects organized with the active participation of students. At the end, the songs “Azərbaycanim”, “Qarabağ” and “Mehriban olaq” were performed by the master's students of the Azerbaijan National Conservatory and the Azerbaijan State University of Culture and Art. An ashig tune was also presented by a student of SSU.
